Short description of the project:

The SmartCity.Trans project is designed to improve the quality of life of citizens through the establishment of better solutions in city traffic and the promotion and promotion of innovative, sustainable, clean and energy efficient ways of transport. Some of the measures through which the project operates are mobility management according to specific needs and behavior on traffic behavior. The aim of the project is to develop and implement energy efficiency measures in urban traffic, the application of which will result in the reduction of primary energy consumption and reduction of carbon dioxide emissions and other harmful gases, ensuring the sustainability of the urban transport system.

These measures can be realized by establishing an advanced information and communication system for decision support in traffic. Research and development activities will define the elements of the entire decision support system within smart cities that can be used in traffic. The R & D results will be a system that will consist of a module for monitoring and coordinating actions in traffic and urban environments through independent application solutions, a central horizontal platform for receiving and processing information from newly developed and existing network sensors or information communication systems of other stakeholders participating in joint collaborative research.

The central platform will be based on the Internet of Things and will have the ability to capture data from a variety of sources, whether it’s isolated on the road network, a complex network of senses owned by city or state transport infrastructure management companies, or some other source. An example of other data sources is a BIG DATA database that contains information that can be applied in traffic. The information communication system will be based on cloud computing technologies, which will provide a unique reach of telecommunication and other data sources as well as universal administration of customer data rollouts. The cloud computing technology solution will enable easier integration of electronic applications to improve communication and availability of public and commercial services to citizens and business entities in the city of Rijeka.

The Central Traffic Information Management System will collect, process and make available all available traffic information. The system will be modular and scalable so that it can integrate a whole array of sources and process standardized (DATEX II) or non-standardized input data. The research will focus on the ability to customize the existing sensor interfaces to the traffic infrastructure, to develop a standardized interface for newly developed sensors, and to analyze and develop the data management process. Further research and development steps will be focused on the design and implementation of a complete integrated system that includes a service and organization center for management and oversight, whose activity is related to traffic, as well as the possibilities for wider use of the system in the function of smart cities.

Various application modules (eg mobility management, sleep traffic, infrastructure management, multimodal traffic, monitoring of traffic parameters, etc.), the management and control center can expand its functionality, ie integrate already existing traffic-oriented applications, but also provide preconditions for the development of new modules that extend the functionality and raise the quality of life of urban agglomerations. It will also (with control systems and sensors for early detection of anomalies) enable preventive procedures to increase the degree of security in people’s and property protection. The system will analyze and test the possibility of visualization, business and geospatial analytics on available and newly-collected data sources through the geoinformation system.

The system will enable the development of a common use of resources, infrastructure and assets through the establishment of a holistic paradigm and the development of the concept of collaborative public sector action with the private sector in the development and implementation of a sharing economy-based transport solution model. The concept should enable more efficient use of public-private infrastructure, resources and property in the area of ​​transport with a view to protecting the environment, increasing energy efficiency and security, achieving sustainability of the urban transport system.

The solution will enable the development of intelligent urban mobility and more efficient development of the economy in line with sustainable development, using a widespread paradigm of shared sharing economics. The development envisions the design of functionalities that will allow the creation of automatic alarms that will enable the launch of action plans and operational procedures depending on the results of data processing on the collected data.

The research will focus on establishing a process that will, based on the identification of events, locations and other parameters, select a newly-defined set of instructions to be executed on the basis of established values. The instructions may include resource activation, one or more communication options (eg sending data to external systems, or calling a person or station), and instructions to the caller. The system should enable visualization of data on geospatial digital subsets, statistics and reporting.

The project anticipates the theoretical elaboration of the functionality of individual elements and processes, and the feasibility study. The study will recommend possible modular development directions, which will depend on the plans, capabilities and priorities of the management bodies responsible for managing and managing certain parts of the transport system / infrastructure.
